Extra class for Standard 1
Apr 9th, 2009 by Jesslyn
This week is the 2nd week Wien’s school having their extra class from 2.10 to 4.30pm from Wednesday till Friday for 3 main subject: Chinese, Malay and English.
I am glad that I managed to exempt her from attending the extra class after had a discussion with the headmaster last week. Yeah…Yeah….!!
Hubby and I wrote an official letter to her headmaster and her class teacher stated our reason for not attending the class. Of course, at first the headmaster wishes we could change our mind. To him, this class is essential for standard 1 students to build up their foundation before they go further to std 2 and onwards. He added that from experience, this class is very important.
I am not sure how effective the class is but to me, stay up in school from 7am till 4.30pm is not good at all for little kid at age 7 or 8. I want my kids to enjoy school life but not over loaded by school homework. The headmaster said extra class’s homework will be finished on same day, will not bring back to home. This is good practice however when the kids reach home, they still have to do morning session’s homework if any (most of the time sure got 1 - 2 exercise books). I am sure after the kids reach home after 4.30pm, they will not open their school bag and doing homework again. They will start playing and so on, just like our olden days, right? So the balance homework will be done at night time. Now the question is, they don’t have proper rest time at day time; will they still have energy to do the balance homework? If they are already dead tire around 7-8pm, how do the parents do revision with the kids then?
I know Wien very well, if she no nap at afternoon, when reach 7-8pm, she will start making noise and angry easily. If she no nap, then at night I have difficulty coach her do revision or homework. She will easily get less patient and talk restlessly. No point to teach her if she acts like that! I will quickly chase her to bed even though did not finish her homework. But this girl has self discipline; she will still finish her homework then only go to bed.
Our reason for not attending extra class is pretty simple: we want her to have more rest after back from school, then at night we coach her doing homework as well as doing some revision. That’s it!
Ok, now she is off from extra class but our responsibility become bigger. We have to ensure she can catch up all her lesson and understand what she learns. Other wise her teacher will come after me!

Over here, children study that long hours too, but for below 7 or 8 years old, they take nap at school for like an hour or more. Then only the classes resume. Too bad Malaysian still don’t have this system…
So it’s very tiring for kids.
do update more about Wien school thingy here oh…this sure a good experience to share with us..I need “sample” mah..:p
Wow so fast prepare for std2, when std3 they will prepare for std4?? No end!
Only Pri. 1 and the kids got so much burden oredi. No extra classes for our kids means extra work for us. Seems dat we, parents, are more stressed than the kids. I don’t remember being so stressed during my school days … sigh …
better to let them stay till evening…haha…then come back makan and sleep, we also not so penat take care of them.
I think u’ve made the right decision. It’s really tiring for them to spend so many hrs in sch. And then come home, still gotta do h/work. I nvr knew u can actually exempt ur child from such classes. I thot compulsory one. Ok, if my girl is required to do the same next yr, I’ll write them a letter too.
When my SIL told me about the extra class for her std. 1 son, I too was surprised. Karl is in std. 2 but no extra class yet and I thought KL schools are more kiasu???? *puzzled*
whoa…got extra class till so late :|…that’s a bit too much for std 1 kid lehh
I support your decision. Rest and play is very important. Coach them when they are alert.
